The blank white wall bordering the Ever and Anon Park on East Main Street in Belleville will be transformed into a penciled pattern of paint-by-number blocks today in preparation for artists to begin painting a locally-designed mural next weekend.

The mural, designed by artist Michael Anderson of Anderson Studios, was created from black-and-white archival photos of  Belleville at the turn of the century. Each figure and building facade in the mural is depicted from an actual person or view found in the photographs.   Painting will begin on the mural Saturday during the Old Town Market, from 9 a.m. to noon, and volunteers are invited to help. An overhead projector will be used to project the images of the mural onto the wall to be outlined and numbered.

Volunteers will be given a numberand each shade of color in the mural will be assigned a number. Like a paint-by-number picture, each number and color will match. The mural is sepia-toned, much like an old-time photograph and depicts the original farmer's market in downtown Belleville.

The Belleville Heritage Society commissioned Anderson and George Gasparich, an art teacher at Belleville Township West High School, to design the 450-square-foot mural for the side of the building at Mascoutah Avenue and East Main Street. The paint and supplies have been donated by local businesses for the project.

Anderson is the designer and artist who created the animal murals displayed at the Lakeside Cafe at the St. Louis Zoo.
