Gateway Pastel Artists Juried Exhibiton Honorable Mention Award

Michael Anderson's "Aunt Betty's Cow" is a pastel painting that is part of the 4th annual Gateway Pastel Artists Juried Exhibition. |
South City

Creative Art Gallery and Framing owner promotes local art by Julie Randle, Lifestyle Editor Mary Ellen Shortland
knows good art when she sees it. After all she's a St. Louis gallery owner
with 30 years of experience. Shortland recently lent a helping hand to
artists in the Gateway Pastel Society. Her Creative
Art Gallery is featuring the 4th annual GPA
juried exhibition. "The richness and depth of color you can get with pastel
is stunning and amazing. It stands on its own, " said Shortland. Artists
use a variety of techniques and perspectives. For instance, Michael Anderson's
"Aunt Betty's Cow" has a white fence, a barn and green pasture with little
lines of blue, green, orange, black and white. "It is a differeent technique,
it's kind of light hearted and fun," said Shortland, "kind of like van
Gogh with pastels." The pastel pieces were judged by Douglas
Dawson, an artist instructor at the Art Students
League in Denver and member of the American Watercolor Society and the
Pastel Society of America.
